proof9704web-sRivendell has a computer lab with Windows computers, with a firewall that protects students from inappropriate material. In all grade levels the computer teacher works with the homeroom teachers and other specials teachers to help supplement what they are learning in the classroom to learning in the computer lab.

  • In Younger Kids we focus on controlling the mouse, becoming familiar with how to use the computers in the lab, and computer vocabulary. Most of the Younger Kid’s time is spent “playing” on educational websites that focus on reading, math, science or social studies skills. After winter break we will start doing small projects using digital storytelling and presentation programs.
  • Middle Kids start practicing keyboarding, and we start working on how to do useful research on the web which will help them to write their recitations. We use educational websites that focus on reading, writing, math and topic work. Some other skills that will be introduced are word processing, presentations and digital storytelling.
  • Older Kids continue to work on keyboarding and by winter break the students will be typing a lot of their writing onto the computer. Rivendell has a secure Gmail account and every Older Kid will get an account so that they can access their writing from Chromebooks in the classroom or at home. Some skills that are stressed are research skills, word processing, presentations, and digital storytelling. We’ll learn about fundamental computer science concepts (input/output, data storage, algorithms) and begin coding, along with practicing math and writing skills.
