Dear Rivendell families, alumni and staff,
Can you believe we’re entering the last month of the school year? It’s an exciting and busy time, and there are a few really special Rivendell traditions that fall within this time frame.
Here’s what you need to know!
Spring Program-May 7th at 6 pm, held at Rocky Mountain High School
This is a feel-good favorite! It’s a chance for all of our students, Preschool through 5th Grade, to show off what they’ve learned in music this year. (There’s a little Spanish and German thrown in, also!) The songs are sweet and inspiring. Family and friends are invited.
Fun Run-May 8th starting at 9 am, held at Rivendell’s track
With a theme like “It’s always sunny at Rivendell,” our Fun Run is guaranteed to be a bright, fun event! Fun Run is fundraising with a focus on health and activity. Parents are invited to come cheer for the kids, or to help out as volunteers, or both!
Sky Ranch-May 11th-15th
Ask any 4th or 5th grader what they love about being an Older Kid at Rivendell and it’s likely that Sky Ranch will come up in the conversation! Located up Poudre Canyon, Sky Ranch is a true adventure. During the day students explore, play and learn about the environment before roasting marshmallows around a campfire and turning in for the night. 3rd grade students also get a taste of Sky Ranch for one day and night.
Field Day-May 20th from 1-3 pm, held on Rivendell’s Playground
Our last “hurrah!” for the school year, the Field Day is a chance for students, staff and parent volunteers to play, compete and enjoy the sunshine. If you are interested in helping out during Rivendell’s Field Day, please see Elisa in the front office.

Monday is the Last Day to Order Class Pictures
Sign up and pay for yours at the front office! Pictures will be ready to be picked up before the end of the school year. All proceeds go to art and music supplies.

Rivendell’s Lock Down and Lock Out Procedures
Dear Parents,
On Thursday, April 24, we were notified of a criminal suspect in the neighborhoods near Rivendell. We were advised by police to carry out “Lock Out” which involves bringing everyone inside and locking all exterior doors. Rivendell has written and practiced procedures for both Lock OUT (carry on as normal indoors with exterior doors locked) and Lock DOWN (go into classrooms, lock classroom doors, turn off lights). These procedures are in place at all schools.
You all were notified through email about our school’s Lock Out. Because the notification was right before drop-off, we used email for our main method of communication. If Lock Out were to happen during the school day, we would use our two-way radios and in-person notification to let staff, visitors, and students know to come inside. We always plan to send emails to parents when there is an emergency at Rivendell.
For parents, it’s important to know that during Lock Out, all exterior doors are locked. However, if you are arriving to pick up or drop off your child, we will let you in through the front doors. During a Lock Out, it is safer for everyone to be indoors. We are fortunate at Rivendell to have magnetic locks on our front doors that allow us to choose who enters our building. The dock doors remain locked all day, and teachers use key cards and codes to enter.
Please feel free to ask me questions about Rivendell’s emergency procedures.
Sincerely,
Mary Nichols
Rivendell Principal

Many Hands Make Light Work!
Yesterday’s Spring Clean Up day at Rivendell was a huge success. Rivendell families and staff gathered to help trim trees, paint, clean windows, wash benches and tables, change light bulbs and many other things. Thanks to everyone who took time from their busy Saturday to contribute!

Keep Collecting Sponsors for Fun Run!
Fun Run 2015 will be held on the morning of Friday, May 8th. After running, students will be given a form announcing how many laps they completed. They will have a little over a week to gather the money from their sponsors. All money (whether cash, check or through PayPal) must be returned to Rivendell, along with your child’s sponsor sheet, by Monday, May 18th. EVEN IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT CHOOSE TO COLLECT SPONSORS, WE REQUEST THAT YOU RETURN THEIR SPONSOR SHEET. This will help us to keep track of all of our students, and to ensure we don’t inadvertently miss anyone.
Fun Run focuses on the importance of staying active and healthy. This year the funds raised will go towards purchasing comfy, functional furniture for kids to enjoy in the Commons area and library.
If you’re willing to volunteer a little time helping out with preparations or during Fun Run, please sign up here or talk to Jenda in the front office. It’s an easy and fun way to make a difference at Rivendell!

Board Member Spotlight: Debbie McFarland
How many children do you currently have or have you had attend Rivendell? I have two children, Logan (8) and Rhys (2). Logan is finishing up 3rd grade, and Rhys will be starting Preschool at Rivendell in the fall.
Why did you want to join the Board? I am so grateful to Rivendell and the amazing teachers and staff that work here for helping my son really engage in learning and thrive in a school environment. I am passionate about Rivendell’s philosophy and mission to educate the individual, whole child. I wanted to be able to give back to those who have given so much to our family.
What is your favorite thing about Rivendell School? There are so many things to love about Rivendell, but absolutely, hands down, my favorite thing about Rivendell isn’t a thing at all! It is the people – the friendly, warm, caring, dedicated teachers and staff who have always welcomed us to school with a smile and gone out of their way to help my child feel successful. Thank you all!
