Rivendell Volunteering
Rivendell Volunteering

Dear Rivendell families, alumni and staff,

What a great year it’s been!  Many, many thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped out with Fun Run and Field Day!  Your participation adds so much to our community.  We look forward to a terrific 2015-16 school year.

During the summer newsletters will only go out once a month.  However, office staff will be available all summer long if you have questions or need assistance.  Our Commons area will be undergoing its big remodel during most of the summer, but the school will be open for summer camps.

Have a wonderful, adventurous summer!

Retainer Due on June 1st
Just a reminder that retainers for the 2015-16 school year are due on June 1st.  You should be receiving a statement for your child’s retainer within the next week or so.

Tuition for the school year is divided into ten equal payments.  The first of those ten payments is the retainer.  It officially reserves your child’s place for the school year.  The retainer is non-refundable.  The other nine payments are billed as monthly payments for the school months of September through May.

We’re pleased to be able to say that our preschool is currently full, and our Younger Kids classrooms are filling quickly.  This speaks volumes to the reputation which Rivendell has earned.  However, as wait lists form for classroom openings, it becomes essential that your retainer be paid in order to save your child’s place.  After June 1st we cannot guarantee that your child’s place will be held if the retainer has not been paid.

Fun Run Follow-up

In spite of the terrible weather, Rivendell kids made do and Fun Run was held inside the building.  Parents, staff and fellow students cheered the runners on, and a great time was had by all.
We are still collecting donations and sponsor forms, so feel free to send them in or drop them off.  Thank you for your generosity and support!

Rivendell Volunteering
Rivendell Volunteering

Dear Rivendell families, alumni and staff,

We’re down to the last two weeks of school!  As a reminder, our last day of school is Friday, May 22nd, and it is a half day.  School ends at 11:30 am and there will be no after care provided.

This week third, fourth and fifth graders are heading up to Sky Ranch.  Remember to send your child with plenty of socks and snow gear!

It’s (not) Always Sunny at Rivendell…
The Fun Run has been postponed until Tuesday, May 19th from 1-3 pm.  We know it makes the collection of donations a little tight, but it would be helpful if everyone could return their sponsor sheet and donations by the last day of school.  Thank you for being flexible!

Field Day is Wednesday, May 20th from 1-3 pm – Volunteers needed!
Field Day is a fun tradition that is celebrated at Rivendell during the last week of school.  There are games, races, and best of all, a dunk tank!  Parents are invited to come join in the festivities, and we could really use a few volunteers to help run the stations.  If you’re interested in volunteering at the different stations, please check in at the front office.

Retainer Due on June 1st
Just a reminder that retainers for the 2015-16 school year are due on June 1st.  You should be receiving a statement for your child’s retainer within the next week or so.

We Need Boxes!
We’re so excited about our library and Commons area remodel!  The transformation will begin on June 1st, but before then we’ll need to pack up all of our library books and clear out the space.  We are in need of lots of sturdy boxes!  If you have any to spare please drop them off at the library desk.  Thank you!

Library Reminders
Library books are due on Monday, May 18th!  Look under beds and car seats, inside desks, in personal bookshelves and get those books back!
If you are cleaning out bookshelves over the summer, please think of donating your gently-used children’s books to Rivendell.
Thanks for a great year, and keep reading! ~ The Library Committee

Dear Rivendell families, alumni and staff,

This week is going to be such a fun one!

We have our Spring Program on Thursday night at Rocky Mountain High School.  Students should arrive by 5:45 pm, wearing nice clothing that is light-weight. (It gets hot under the lights.)  The program will start promptly at 6:00.  Friends and family are invited.  **After care on Thursday will end at 5:30 so that students and their families can get to the Spring Program on time.**

On Friday morning we have our Fun Run.  It will start at 9:00 am and is held on the track on our playground.  The running times are as follows:

PS: 9:00-9:30
YK: 9:40-10:10
MK: 10:20-10:50
OK: 11:00-11:30

Parents are invited to come see their child run and then pitch in with cheering on the other children.  We still need volunteers, so if you’re interested, please sign up on the poster by the bulletin board.  Thank you!

The PayPal link for donations is http://www.rivendell-school.org/fun-run/.  Checks should be made out to “Rivendell School” with “Fun Run” and the name of the runner on the memo line.

Please hold your Fun Run Sponsor Sheet until you have collected all of the donations (through cash, check or PayPal).
This will help us keep better track of the donations.  Also, we request that all students return their Sponsor Sheets, even if they do not have any sponsors.

Principal for the Day: Cali, Younger Kid

Last Wednesday Cali had the opportunity to work alongside Mary as our “Principal for the Day.”  She did a fantastic job making sure that the school ran smoothly, and also assisted in handing out treats to all of the teachers and staff.  By the end of the day she was a pro with our walkie-talkie system!  This special privilege will be up for auction again next year during our Soiree.

Come Meet our New Principal, Duane
Our new principal, Duane Helfer, will be spending several days at Rivendell this week.  Parents, students and community members are invited to meet and welcome him on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30-8:30 am and from 3:00-4:00 pm.  Let’s give him a warm Rivendell welcome!

After Care Ends at 5:30 pm thisThursday
Please note that after care will end at 5:30 pm this Thursday so that students and their families can get to the Spring Program on time.  Thanks!

No Reading Readiness this Week
There is no Reading Readiness class this Monday.  There are two more classes left–on May 11th and May 18th.

Rivendell’s Newest Staff Member – Dale, Facilities Technician

We are so excited to share that Rivendell now has a staff member devoted to the upkeep of our amazing facility! Dale comes to us with a variety of background and experience, and we sure are grateful for all of his expertise. Dale will be at Rivendell each day from 9am – 3pm. Please be sure to say hello to Dale when you see him around the Rivendell campus!

There’s still time to find sponsors!  Fun Run is this Friday.
Fun Run 2015 will be held on the morning of Friday, May 8th.  After running, students will be given a form announcing how many laps they completed. They will have a little over a week to gather the money from their sponsors.  All money (whether cash, check or through PayPal) must be returned to Rivendell, along with your child’s sponsor sheet, by Monday, May 18th.  EVEN IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT CHOOSE TO COLLECT SPONSORS, WE REQUEST THAT YOU RETURN THEIR SPONSOR SHEET.  This will help us to keep track of all of our students, and to ensure we don’t inadvertently miss anyone.

Fun Run focuses on the importance of staying active and healthy.  This year the funds raised will go towards purchasing comfy, functional furniture for kids to enjoy in the Commons area and library.

If you’re willing to volunteer a little time helping out with preparations or during Fun Run, please sign up here or talk to Jenda in the front office.  It’s an easy and fun way to make a difference at Rivendell!

Please Wear Your Purple Rivendell Shirts to All Field Trips
We have quite a few field trips left this month, and we’d like to remind parents that children should wear their purple Rivendell shirt to all field trips. This is for safety reasons as well as to show Rivendell pride!

Rivendell Volunteering

Dear Rivendell families, alumni and staff,

Can you believe we’re entering the last month of the school year?  It’s an exciting and busy time, and there are a few really special Rivendell traditions that fall within this time frame.

Here’s what you need to know!

Spring Program-May 7th at 6 pm, held at Rocky Mountain High School
This is a feel-good favorite!  It’s a chance for all of our students, Preschool through 5th Grade, to show off what they’ve learned in music this year.  (There’s a little Spanish and German thrown in, also!)  The songs are sweet and inspiring.  Family and friends are invited.

Fun Run-May 8th starting at 9 am, held at Rivendell’s track

With a theme like “It’s always sunny at Rivendell,” our Fun Run is guaranteed to be a bright, fun event!  Fun Run is fundraising with a focus on health and activity.  Parents are invited to come cheer for the kids, or to help out as volunteers, or both!

Sky Ranch-May 11th-15th

Ask any 4th or 5th grader what they love about being an Older Kid at Rivendell and it’s likely that Sky Ranch will come up in the conversation!  Located up Poudre Canyon, Sky Ranch is a true adventure.  During the day students explore, play and learn about the environment before roasting marshmallows around a campfire and turning in for the night. 3rd grade students also get a taste of Sky Ranch for one day and night.

Field Day-May 20th from 1-3 pm, held on Rivendell’s Playground
Our last “hurrah!” for the school year, the Field Day is a chance for students, staff and parent volunteers to play, compete and enjoy the sunshine.  If you are interested in helping out during Rivendell’s Field Day, please see Elisa in the front office.

Monday is the Last Day to Order Class Pictures
Sign up and pay for yours at the front office!  Pictures will be ready to be picked up before the end of the school year. All proceeds go to art and music supplies.

Rivendell’s Lock Down and Lock Out Procedures
Dear Parents,
On Thursday, April 24, we were notified of a criminal suspect in the neighborhoods near Rivendell. We were advised by police to carry out “Lock Out” which involves bringing everyone inside and locking all exterior doors. Rivendell has written and practiced procedures for both Lock OUT (carry on as normal indoors with exterior doors locked) and Lock DOWN (go into classrooms, lock classroom doors, turn off lights). These procedures are in place at all schools.
You all were notified through email about our school’s Lock Out. Because the notification was right before drop-off, we used email for our main method of communication. If Lock Out were to happen during the school day, we would use our two-way radios and in-person notification to let staff, visitors, and students know to come inside. We always plan to send emails to parents when there is an emergency at Rivendell.
For parents, it’s important to know that during Lock Out, all exterior doors are locked. However, if you are arriving to pick up or drop off your child, we will let you in through the front doors. During a Lock Out, it is safer for everyone to be indoors.  We are fortunate at Rivendell to have magnetic locks on our front doors that allow us to choose who enters our building. The dock doors remain locked all day, and teachers use key cards and codes to enter.

Please feel free to ask me questions about Rivendell’s emergency procedures.

Sincerely,

Mary Nichols
Rivendell Principal

Many Hands Make Light  Work!
Yesterday’s Spring Clean Up day at Rivendell was a huge success.  Rivendell families and staff gathered to help trim trees, paint, clean windows, wash benches and tables, change light bulbs and many other things.  Thanks to everyone who took time from their busy Saturday to contribute!

Keep Collecting Sponsors for Fun Run!

If you’re willing to volunteer a little time helping out with preparations or during Fun Run, please sign up here or talk to Jenda in the front office.  It’s an easy and fun way to make a difference at Rivendell!

Board Member Spotlight: Debbie McFarland

How many children do you currently have or have you had attend Rivendell? I have two children, Logan (8) and Rhys (2).  Logan is finishing up 3rd grade, and Rhys will be starting Preschool at Rivendell in the fall.
Why did you want to join the Board? I am so grateful to Rivendell and the amazing teachers and staff that work here for helping my son really engage in learning and thrive in a school environment.  I am passionate about Rivendell’s philosophy and mission to educate the individual, whole child.  I wanted to be able to give back to those who have given so much to our family.
What is your favorite thing about Rivendell School?  There are so many things to love about Rivendell, but absolutely, hands down, my favorite thing about Rivendell isn’t a thing at all!  It is the people – the friendly, warm, caring, dedicated teachers and staff who have always welcomed us to school with a smile and gone out of their way to help my child feel successful.  Thank you all!

Lego Robotics Camps are Awesome!

Our Lego Robotics camps are designed for kids between 9-12 years old, and are the perfect way to get your children out of the house during the summer, using their minds to think and create and build.  Check out our offerings through the link below!

Letter from Rivendell Board of Directors

April 20, 2015

Dear Rivendell Families,

It is our great pleasure to announce the appointment of Mr. Duane Helfer as the new Rivendell Principal, effective June 1, 2015. The Board’s unanimous decision to select Duane followed the enthusiastic and unanimous recommendation of the Search Committee, which indicated a nearly perfect match between the position criteria and Duane’s experience, skills, and passion for individualized education.

Duane brings 28 years of education experience to Rivendell. He holds a MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas and is licensed with the State of Colorado as both a Professional Teacher and Principal. Duane’s depth of experience spans roles as a classroom and G/T teacher, Library Technology Educator, Technology Instructor, Assistant Principal, and Principal. Duane’s personal educational beliefs strongly align with the philosophies of Rivendell and his intelligence, warmth, humor, strong leadership and administrative skills will allow him to continue to build Rivendell upon the solid foundation built by the staff and his predecessors.

We are also pleased to welcome Duane’s spouse Shannon Collings-Helfer to the Fort Collins community. An accomplished educator herself, Shannon currently serves as a second grade teacher at Vera Scott Elementary in Colorado Springs.

Duane will be working at Rivendell in a part-time capacity through the end of May. Though not yet finalized, the part-time schedule will include ample opportunity for Duane and the community to get to know each other. We will let you know Duane’s schedule via the newsletter once it is set.

The Board of Directors would like to thank and congratulate the Search Committee, composed of faculty, parents and Board members, who worked tirelessly to successfully complete the challenging and critical task of selecting our new Principal.

Please join us in welcoming Duane and Shannon to the Rivendell community.

Sincerely,

Rivendell Board of Directors

Rivendell Volunteering
Rivendell Volunteering

Dear Rivendell families, alumni and staff,

Our Scholastic Bookfair was a huge success!  We had just over $5,000 in sales, and $537 worth of books were purchased for our library.  That means that Scholastic will donate 537 books to charity!  Enormous thanks to Jamie DeVries for coordinating our Book Fair, and to all the volunteers who helped run it.  Happy reading!

Volunteer Breakfast on Friday, April 24th
We love our volunteers, and we’d like to show our appreciation by hosting a volunteer breakfast on Friday, April 24th from 8-8:30 am.  The breakfast is open to all volunteers–including parents, grandparents, Board members, and anyone who donates their time and energy to making Rivendell great.  Thank you!

Spring Clean-up on April 25th
On Saturday, April 25th all members of the Rivendell community are invited to pitch in and spruce up the school.  In past years we have taken this time to dust, clean windows, wash walls, and tidy up outside.  This is a great opportunity to show pride in our school, as well as to get to know the staff, alumni and families.

If you’re interested in volunteering, email Elisa in the front office (elisa@rivendell-school.org). We’ll be starting in the morning and will finish up around lunch time.

Rivendell Running Club Starts this Wednesday!

marathon-runners.jpg

Rivendell’s Running Club is starting up again!  There will be three Wednesday sessions (April 22, 29 and May 6) starting at 3:30 pm.  Cost is $5 per session.  The Running Club is open to Older Kids only.  If you have questions, please contact Megan.

Start Collecting Sponsors for Fun Run!
You probably heard all about our fun-filled, beach-ball-bouncing Fun Run launch at Group Sing last Wednesday!  Your child should have brought home a large white envelope which contains information about Fun Run and a sponsor sheet.  Students are encouraged to invite friends and family members to sponsor them as they run laps around our track.

Plant it Forward
Mary Nichols, Rivendell Principal, is participating in Leadership Fort Collins this year.  Part of her work with this group involves a service project, and her group has chosen to support FoCo Cafe by getting volunteers to help build planters for the cafe. These planters will be used to grow food that the FoCo Cafe can use.
To learn more about the service project, see the flyer below. If your family or business would like to participate, contact Mary!
From the FoCo Cafe Website:

FoCo Cafe’s mission is to build community by providing nutritious and delicious meals to the people of Fort Collins regardless of their ability to pay while using mostly local, organic, and sustainably grown ingredients.

FoCo Cafe is the first nonprofit restaurant in Fort Collins. Cafe patrons set the price for cafe cuisine in this pay-what-you-can setting. Instead of a cash register, a donation box is on the counter. If you can give more, please pay it forward. If you have a little less, pay what you can. If your pockets are empty, participate in community with your time and talent in exchange for a mouth-watering meal. Daily menu selections are made primarily using fresh, locally grown ingredients, and funded by the donations of patrons.
